A lady called me after a friend of mine referred her to me (I had helped my friend paint her own cabinets). The lady asked if I could stop by and take a look at her well-used kitchen. Over the years of raising her family, the cabinets had taken a good beating and were in need of a “face lift.”
Indeed, her kitchen needed help. We discussed what she wanted done and what it would take. I went home, calculated the estimate, sent her an email, she agreed, and we scheduled the work.

It’s important to note that refinishing kitchen cabinets is an intrusive project. It’s not for the faint of heart. Here’s what’s required:
- Every cabinet door and drawer must be removed.
- Because applying the paint requires a sprayer, any surface and object that you do NOT want to be painted must be covered or removed. This includes floors, in some cases ceilings, and appliances. In addition, the over spray must controlled so that it does not enter other rooms
- All cabinet boxes are masked off so that paint does not end up on the inside of your cabinets. Unfortunately, that means you have difficulty accessing anything inside.
- Paint takes time to dry. There’s no rushing it. Every door and cabinet box requires 2 coats of primer, and at least 2 coats of paint. Additional coats may be needed if sanding blemishes is required, especially if you find a hair or something in your “final” coat.
However, in the end, you will enjoy years of a beautiful kitchen. You get to customize the cabinet color perfectly to your taste. If you can tolerate the short-term inconvenience, it’s a fantastic way to dramatically increase the value of your kitchen at a fraction of the cost of replacing the cabinets and countertops.
When the job was finished, the customer was pleased with the end result, although the inconvenience was a bit difficult given her set of circumstances.

As always, thanks for reading about this project. I hope you enjoyed the post and learned something new.
